Do you have to carry a gun in your inventory to find its ammo in dead space?

im trying to save ammo for the contact gun to get credits mainly to buy health packs and power nodes. so do i actually have to have it on me or can i have it in my safe? just wondering pretty sure i have to have it on my because i have yet to find flamethrower or cutter ammo and i dont carry either of those.
